The exhibition “Matisse, Like a Novel”, held at the Centre Pompidou in Paris from October 21, 2020 to February 22, 2021, is one of the most significant retrospectives ever dedicated to Henri Matisse. Organized to celebrate the 150th anniversary of his birth (1869–1954), it offers a comprehensive overview of his artistic career and his decisive role in modern art.

The exhibition brings together more than 230 works and around 70 archival documents, drawn from the Centre Pompidou’s Musée national d’art moderne as well as major international collections. Structured as a chronological narrative in nine chapters, the exhibition traces Matisse’s evolution from his late beginnings in the 1890s to his final groundbreaking experiments with cut-out gouaches, which redefined his artistic language.
